HELPING UP MISSION
Baltimore, Maryland

Waldon Studio Architects & Planners provided architectural/engineering services for the 100 year old Helping Up Mission facility located in Baltimore, Maryland.  The mission owns an entire city block comprised of five historic buildings.  WSA's work involved four contiguous buildings of 83,000sf.

The buildings are in a National Register Historic District in Baltimore. Therefore, not only was the design work reviewed and approved by CHAPS but also the Maryland Historic Trust. The exterior facades were preserved with replication of window and restoration of the historic storefront.  Significant interior features included preservation of the existing tin ceiling.

The building design includes a four story atrium with skylight and the two story interior street.  The program is highly complex separating three distinctly different user populations.  Further, the project is fully occupied at all times so phasing the construction was a critical element in the design and the construction strategy.
